Fresh Starts for Families

Welcoming Home is dedicated to helping Marin families who are transitioning out of homelessness and poverty by fully furnishing and equipping their “new” homes. We engage the Marin community in donating funds and needed items because these families are our neighbors.

Welcoming Home was founded by the former chapter heads of Grateful Gatherings Marin.

About This Picture

L to R: Francisco L. - Single father and chef; Laurie W. - volunteer; Marsha R. - Co-Founder; Laura L., Grandmother; Kathleen M. – volunteer; Greg H. – Co-Founder; Francisco L. Sr. - Grandfather and Chris L. - Grandson. We chose this picture for our home page because it represents the three generations in a family that we helped, along with some of us on the volunteer team, all gathered in the family’s “new” living room.

100% of all donations go directly to helping the families we serve.

“With the divisiveness and turmoil that pervades our country right now, there is hope in seeing the direct impact that a caring community can make in the lives of its residents who need help.” ~ Marsha Roberts, Co-Founder

ABOUT THE FAMILIES

The families we help are referred to us by local social service agencies, such as North Marin Community ServicesGilead House and Homeward Bound.

These families have been through major hardships. They’ve often escaped abusive relationships or dangerous, strife-ridden home countries. Thanks to local Marin social service agencies, they now have safe and relatively affordable housing, sometimes after being on a Section 8 waiting list for years. While awaiting housing, the families typically live in shelters, in single rooms or in their cars.

“I like that the items I donate go straight from me to the family in need in the same day".  ~ Jennifer F., Donor

WHERE WE COME IN

When the day finally arrives that the families can move into their “new” home, they have no furniture or household items: no beds, no chairs, no tables, no dishes, no towels, etc. That’s where we and our wonderful Marin community come in. Through our generous donors, we provide the families with brand new beds, linens and towels; plus, high quality, gently used furniture and household goods. What’s more, thanks to our phenomenal volunteers, we move everything in and set it all up in one day … installing furniture, making the beds, hanging pictures, organizing kitchen items, etc.

“Thank you for giving us a beautiful home and bikes for us to ride and a bed for Poncho (the dog). I feel like I have so much more control over my life and I feel so cared for. I can’t remember the last time I felt like this. This is one of the most amazing things I have ever experienced. Thank you and every person who had a hand in this gift for my family and me.”  ~ Maraea M., working single mom with three children
