These two Welcomings are generously sponsored by Jill Hill, retired Coldwell Banker realtor, and a couple who wishes to remain anonymous. The sponsors’ support will provide a “Starter Kit” of essential items right away, help us collect and install donated furniture and other household goods, purchase brand-new beds for the family, and have items from various donors delivered by professional movers.

Home 1 is where James lives, has been homeless and living outdoors since before 2022 when he was planning on living with his brother who unexpectedly died. Since his early 30’s he has had debilitating back and neck pain that has severely impacted his ability to work. His previous work as a forklift operator and general laborer involved physically demanding tasks which took their toll making it impossible to continue and requiring him to apply for disability. The timing coincided with the COVID 19 epidemic leading to several years of homelessness, failed disability support and many many other challenges compounding both his mental and physical state. Thanks to his perseverance and the support of his case worker at Catholic Charities, James will be able to settle into an apartment at last. His case worker said, “This guy is so deserving. He’s never had a place in his life. He had a bad childhood and has been on his own for a long time.” James is truly grateful for all the support he has received from his case worker at Catholic Charities and to Welcoming Home for our assistance with making his new apartment a home.

Geoffrey lives in Home 2. He’s an engineer and self-employed construction professional who also designs sound systems for concerts. His work took him around the world — from projects on desalination plants in Libya to creating a digital sound studio for a band in Mexico. He built a solid career, supported himself, and was even able to buy a small home. About five years ago, everything changed. His home was robbed and completely trashed; he lost almost all of his belongings. Around the same time, he suffered a serious back injury that limited the kind of construction work he could do. With his home left unlivable and his income stopped, the bank  foreclosed. For the next four years, Geoffrey lived on the streets. Recently, he was finally able to move into a small apartment through the help of Catholic Charities — an opportunity he is deeply grateful for. A neighbor lent him a few pieces of furniture, including anr armchair with upholstery held together by safety pions. Beyond that, he has very little. He is so looking forward to having his place fully furnished, not just for comfort, but so he can focus on rebuilding his sound studio business go back to supporting himself.
