A New Beginning: Safety, Stability, and a Place to Call Home

Lee and her son, Shawn left their home to escape a dangerous and violent situation with Shawn's father.

Lee has both a bachelor's and a master's degree and worked as a mental health therapist for 22 years but left it all behind to make a fresh start in a new state for herself and her son.

With support from Catholic Charities of Santa Rosa, Lee was able to move into a new apartment and begin the process of creating a new home for herself and Shawn.

Lee plans to return to work as a mental health therapist once things settle down, but in the meantime, she is earning a living by completing orders and deliveries through an online app.

Shawn loves playing the flute and is in the school band. He enjoys building with LEGOs, online gaming, and video games. After leaving the difficult situation he grew up in, Shawn is very happy to have landed in a safe place with his mom.

Return

Upon seeing their redecorated apartment, Lee was filled with gratitude, exclaiming, “Wow, wow, wow! This is perfect! We are so amazed with everything and feel so blessed by you and your friends [volunteers]. Keep doing exactly what you do! It is life changing on this side.”

Note: As the home lead I was touched the day of the welcoming to see 13 year old Shawn immediately sit down at his new desk and start a project in his very own work space (which was a converted laundry closet). —Laura

About Sponsored Welcomings

"Sponsorship" means paying for the brand new mattresses, box springs and frames; the cost of the movers; the Starter Kit of necessary items that the individual or family needs in the short term, and any needed items that aren't donated. To enable us to help more people, we need more organizations, groups of friends, schools, etc. to sponsor Welcomings.
