Sponsored Welcoming
Charaya is from Cambodia. She came to this country 50 years ago, escaping the war there after having lost all her family. She had to start from scratch and did quite well for many years; she was an engineer, then opened a skin care business and then went into interior design. She was able to set aside enough money to buy a house.
When COVID hit, she refinanced her home but was scammed in the process. The bank evicted her and took all her possesions. After staying with a friend for a short while, she was able to rent a room in a house. The landlord lived there, too, and became abusive: turning off her electricity for three months, ordering her to clean floors with just rags, etc.
After she lived there for three years, Community Action Marin was able to help her get a small apartment. She moved in just before the end of the year but had no furniture and minimal kitchen necessities. When an anonymous donor heard her story, they wanted to sponsor the furnishing of her home.

Return Home
Charaya was shocked when she returned. "I didn't think you would do all this!" she said. "I thought you would just give me a bed and maybe a chair."
Besides the bed and chairs, we found the perfect "hope chest" that was donated and turned into the altar that she had hoped for.
Charaya insisted on taking a group photo with all of us, and hugged us each. "I have not seen this type of kindness for many years," she said before we left

About sponsored Welcomings
"Sponsorship" means paying for the brand new mattresses, box springs and frames; the cost of the movers; the Starter Kit of necessary items that the individual or family needs in the short term, and any needed items that aren't donated. To enable us to help more people, we need more organizations, groups of friends, schools, etc. to sponsor Welcomings.
