Sponsored Welcoming
by Gaby Federal, Jill Kantola and Friends

Less than a year ago, Wilma was in a traumatic domestic violence situation. Thanks to support from the Center for Domestic Peace, she was able to escape and find an apartment for herself and her two sons. Then, in October, the family had to move out. The landlord had raised the rent to the point where Wilma couldn't afford it, even though she works full time for the County as a caregiver for the elderly. In addition, the place was rat infested, so they couldn't take furniture with them.

In November, North Marin Community Services was able to help her find another apartment. The family couldn't bring any furniture with them, though, due to the pest infestation, so they were starting from scratch.

Wilma has two sons: Hugo, 16 and Franklin, 9. Hugo gets top grades in school; he loves Math and Science, particularly Chemistry. When we asked him if there was anything special he would like, he said a desk where he could do his homework, as it was hard to do on the floor. He also likes cars; he can’t wait to get his license. Franklin is a budding artist; he enjoys creating all types of art. He also loves Bluey.

Return

The family couldn't believe their eyes when they returned. "I never imagined it would be so beautiful," Wilma said.

The boys made a beeline for their room - Hugo smiling ear to ear when he saw his desk and Franklin overjoyed with his art materials.

A couple of days later, we got  text from Hugo, saying they can't believe how beautiful their home is and how grateful they are.

A very special thank you to Gaby Federal, Jill Kantola and their friends for their sponsorship, turning an empty apartment into this beautiful home.

The Welcoming for this family was sponsored by Gaby Federal, Jill Kantola and their friends. This was the fifth year that Gaby and Jill have sponsored a Welcoming.

"Sponsorship" means paying for the brand new mattresses, box springs and frames; the cost of the movers; the Starter Kit of necessary items that the family needs in the short term, and any needed items that aren't donated.

To enable us to help more people, we need more organizations, groups of friends, schools, etc. to sponsor Welcomings.
