Home Away After School Facility
Home Away (homeaway.org) provides an after school facility for middle school and high school kids who are housing insecure or who were recently homeless.
The kids use the facility from 3:00 until 9:00 after school. During that time, they do homework, with help available if needed; play games; learn new skills; have a gourmet, home-cooked dinner and then are taken home with tomorrow's lunch in their backpacks.
The facility already has several homework/study rooms, and a kitchen/dining area. Recently, the organization was given access to the basement of the building and wanted to turn it into a music and games area. They reached out to Welcoming Home for help.
Reaction
The kids and counselors were so happy when they first went downstairs to their new hangout spot. One boy threw himself on one of the beanbag chairs. Two girls tried to read the Chinese writing on the elegant, handmade coffee/game table. Another gave a thumbs up to the Bob Marley poster. “He’s my favorite!” she said.
