Home in Marin County
Felipe was referred to us by North Marin Community Services. His 13-year old daughter, Silvia, had been missing school, so the school sent out an administrator to check up on her. The school official found that the father and daughter were living in one bedroom. The girl was sleeping on an old mattress and the father was sleeping on the floor. They had essentially no furniture, except some shelving and a folding chair.
Thanks to an individual sponsor and items donated by the community, we were able to give the small family new beds, dressers, a desk and some basics to make living in their one-room home a bit more comfortable and functional.
The two were so thrilled when they returned to their "new" room. Silvia laid back in her bed, reveling in its comfort. It had been so long since she had a real bed to sleep on. And, now she can sit at a desk when doing her homework. Dad, a day laborer, looked at us a bit sheepishly and said, "Thank you. You know, I didn't have the money or the time to do this."
Thanks to all who donated furniture to this family; you've given them a gift they will long remember.
